The “little song” that could…

Here’s the story of my tiny miracle, an unexpected surprise gift of a song that keeps growing and growing, emerging gently as an “underground hit” for weddings. “Right Here, Right Now.”

I’m watching the wonderful, teary-eyed love story film “The Notebook,” with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. I can barely help myself. As the final credits roll on the TV screen, my heart is brimming, throbbing with joy and sadness simultaneously. I feel a touch melancholy, yet transported. Where am I? I’m lifted, possibly vibrating on a higher plane, pulsing between worlds. I rush home to my apartment on 14th street and 1st Avenue in New York City, grab my Taylor guitar, trusty paper and pencil, close my eyes, and begin writing. My hand is moving, but in these rare, special moments, when we’re given gifts, we’ve stepped away somewhere else. Within 20 minutes, I have the complete song of “Right Here, Right Now.” I’ve barely crossed out any lines, hardly made any changes. The melody and lyrics almost felt spoken to me in my mind, as if they’d somehow already been written, and I was just translating them into a song. It’s pure magic. Rare. Lucky.

Soon after I record and release “Right Here, Right Now” into the world, something even more magical begins to happen. I begin getting requests, continuously trickling in, on MySpace. Requests from both women and men, who absolutely love the song. Did I have “sheet music” for it? For their friends, relatives, nieces, nephews, mothers, to sing and play at their weddings? And what capo did I use on guitar? I was surprised. To be honest, I had seen myself more as this leather jacket-wearing, smoky-eye makeup dusting, edgy rocker girl; a little bit sexy. Rowwr! But truth be told, I must confess, I’m a natural romantic. I began my romantic songwriting career, at age 8, writing dozens of songs about love and eternity. It was as easy as breathing.

Then I begin to feel humbled, wonderfully excited that “Right Here, Right Now” is catching fire. That people genuinely love it. That people feel it’s their “perfect wedding song,” and want to sing and play “Right Here, Right Now” live at their wedding ceremonies and first dances. Maybe this is the start to something. Maybe this could be an organic, real, word of mouth thing? It feels like the Universe is almost chuckling with me, saying, “Girl, enjoy this. You think you got it all figured out, but leave it to us. And enjoy the ride, honeychild.”

I’m wildly excited! I individually thank each person who emails me, with all my heart, and baffled, give them the sheet music and Instrumental Mp3 for free.

Within a few months, email requests start pouring in more steadily, like gushing rose-scented rainwater. People writing they “absolutely love this song. It’s the most perfect wedding song I’ve ever heard.” And “it made my cry, and I don’t cry.” I was receiving emails from brides, grooms, mothers, fathers, sisters, best friends, couples renewing vows, anniversary couples, lesbians, sons, daughters, pianists. Brides in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and every state in the US. It seemed everywhere in the world, people were feeling connected to “Right Here, Right Now” and its pure, simple message.

After being flooded by requests, weekly, sometimes daily, I start charging for the sheet music and Instrumental Mp3, as the song’s success keeps growing. People are now also singing “Right Here, Right Now” live, using the Instrumental Mp3 as a backing track. I, myself, am whisked to a wedding, just to sing “Right Here, Right Now,” for the first dance. Someone writes to tell me they’ve engraved the words “Right Here, Right Now” on their wedding bands, inspired by this song. Brides frame and hang “Right Here, Right Now” lyrics in their houses, and feature the lyrics in their wedding albums. “Right Here, Right Now” is becoming part of people’s lives.

Today, I feel, so proud, so excited, so curious to see what amazing possibilities will take shape for “Right Here, Right Now.” The ‘little engine that could’ song, with humble beginnings. It seems possible this song could maybe last a long, long time, maybe even past my lifetime, as it grows in popularity; perhaps played at people’s weddings for years to come. It’s a Rock ‘n Roll wedding song at heart, but chock full of pure, classic messages of love, deep spirit, soul mates, sparkling vows and present moment joy.
